Chicago Cultural Center Announces Open House Series Kicking Off Mid-June

From the underground clubs to the mainstream, the Latine influence has been a driving force, infusing House music with a diverse range of rhythms, instrumentation, and cultural nuances. As we celebrate the cultural diversity that defines Chicago's House music, we will also address the challenges faced by Latine artists in gaining recognition and representation within the industry. By recognizing and honoring these contributions, we aim to amplify the voices of Latine artists and foster a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of musical cultures in shaping the global phenomenon that is House music. Harkey’s ouster came just a few months before the start of summer festival season, DCASE’s most visible public offering. From intimate gatherings to bustling clubs, underground culture creators play a pivotal role in shaping the experiences and values of nightlife communities.

By the mid-1990s the house music from Chicago and other American cities had morphed into electronic dance music styles like acid house, trance and drum and bass. These styles came back to the American mainstream as the millennium approached, now packaged as "electronica." Soon, artists like Madonna, Rickey Martin and Jennifer Lopez were singing over tracks you could dance to at a club. By the early 2010s the electronic dance music genre had grown from its roots in these tight-knit, marginalized communities in Chicago to become a massive industry, generating billions of dollars. On the previous day, Friday June 23 from 5-9pm the Chicago Cultural Center will host the conference portion of the festival, featuring Robert Owens as Keynote Speaker. Panel discussions include one hour talks on the queer roots and safe spaces in Chicago’s house music scene, promotional strategies, activism and more.

The fall Open House event is inspired by World Music Festival Chicago and highlights South Asian culture with free music and dance activations throughout the building. Guests can enjoy food by Bombay Eats as they encounter engaging performances, films, artists and meetups across three floors of the Chicago Cultural Center. Others in the lineup include DJs Roy Davis Jr., Emmaculate, and DJ Psycho-B.

CHICAGO — The City of Chicago and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) welcome new and returning free music performances, visual art exhibitions, film programming, and more this summer throughout the Chicago Cultural Center (78 E Washington St). Opening its doors after business hours, the new three-part Open House Series (June 15, Sept 29, Dec 9) invites guests to experience exciting art activations by DCASE’s artists in residence, DJs, shopping, socializing and more throughout the historic building. This musical artform is something people of all ages, genders and sexual orientations have enjoyed for decades. Starting in the late 1970s, house music gets its name from the Chicago club, The Warehouse, which started out as a members-only club for gay men. When the club opened in the late ‘70s, a DJ named Frankie Knuckles was invited to play regularly. Known as the “Godfather of House,” Knuckles’ style involved a mixture of soul, rock, punk, and classics from the disco era.

And house music has certainly permeated the mainstream, thanks to artists such as Beyoncé and Drake, whose most recent albums pay tribute to the form. Visitors are invited to join Summer 2023 Artist in Residence, Aquil "AQ" Charlton, a musician and teaching artist, for several great DIY instrument making workshops and jam sessions with other collaborating artists. AQ will have a mobile studio set up to generate a library of sounds that will be woven into music and played through the sound dome in The Learning Lab.

Visitors may engage with the artists, have a firsthand look at their creative process, and enjoy their work. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the artistry and cultural tapestry that adorns walls and viaducts all over the city. For the first two weeks of the exhibition, the Michigan Avenue Galleries will be transformed into a dynamic urban landscape by three artists painting murals in the gallery space. Visitors will witness as the artists bring their unique visions to life right before their eyes.

The industrial aesthetic is simultaneously sleek and rugged—taking cues from warehouses, factories, and other industrial buildings. Biophilic design celebrates the human-nature connection in the built environment. It was coined in the 1980s and continues to evolve as we recognize the benefit of connecting with nature and the benefits natural materials have on our health and the planet. You may already be familiar with, or even own, a few of these Californian-influenced designs. See which ones are having a moment below – at least for me – and get inspiration for how to decorate with them in your own space. Since minimalism often means doing more with less, you'll often notice the importance of light and contrast in minimalist spaces, like this one by Robson Rak.

These ideas will help you easily gather inspiration for your own home no matter your personal preferences. The period was known for its decorative approach to design, which involved ornamental molding, dramatic drapes, printed wallpaper, and a whole lot of other statement-making accents. Set the scene with warm hardwood floors, and stock up on sleek modern furniture. Then, top things off with classic Southwestern accents—like printed throw pillows, textured rugs, and a couple of potted cacti. Focus on scoring the pieces you need like a sturdy bed, some cozy bedding, a nightstand, and a bedside lamp.

Bold and rich color palette – Jewel tones like emerald, gold, and sapphire, complemented by neutral shades like beige and creams. Patterns like zigzags, chevrons and sunbursts are also prominent in the wall finishes, decor and furnishings. In a bedroom setting, this is often reflected in the window treatments, area rugs, bedspreads, wallpaper and floor pattern.

85 Best Primary Bedroom Design Ideas for Every Style

After all, the space needs to be comfy and livable over anything else. Understated patterns take center stage in designer Eva Bradley’s artful refuge, with dramatic views of San Francisco. We’re especially loving the “ribbon” artwork by Angela Chrusciaki Blehm, which introduces a focal point to the bedroom. Sleek and streamlined, contemporary design will make you feel like the present and future have collided. Whereas “modern style” refers to a specific design movement from the mid-1900s, “contemporary style” refers to the cutting edge of design today. So fill your palette with cool neutrals, snag some experimental furniture, and decorate with a few works of abstract art.

Hang Statement Wallpaper

Designer Angie Hranowsky infused this Austin, Texas, home's bedroom with accents in jewel tones. At her Gramercy Park apartment in New York, designer Cece Barfield Thompson's bed is skirted in a printed floral linen (Lisa Fine Textiles) and draped with sheer panels (Clarence House). At the Future Perfect’s new gallery-slash-home in Los Angeles, founder David Alhadeff opted for a custom mocha wall color and a bronze bedspread in the primary bedroom.

Embrace antique furniture and simple linens, and keep your palette soft and subdued. Textured, earthy, and breezy, boho décor will make you feel like you’ve stepped foot in paradise. The aesthetic is all about layering different colors, prints, and textures. And it makes the most of natural accents—like plants, woven rugs, and rattan furniture. Since boho décor is so popular, there are tons of ways to pull off the look.

Natural Light is a Must

In essence, it is the exact opposite of the sleek, streamlined look of modern and contemporary interiors. Overall, this style draws inspiration from nature to create a warm and welcoming design. Use a sunburst mirror as part of your accent wall – The sunburst mirror is an emblem of Mid Century design. You can place this just above your bed and make it the primary decor of your bedroom. Mid century modernism includes art pieces that include abstract print, or geometric patterns that Scandinavian design would never have.

In addition, statement artwork or black-and-white photography or abstract art can complement this style perfectly. Even if you live far away from the beach, the lure of golden sand and the sound of waves is undeniable. It’s a beautiful display of nature, and many home-owners are designing their bedrooms in the form of beach-inspired-decor. Hammered metals – Utilitarian objects like hand hammered meals are also a common feature in Southwestern style bedrooms. Examples of which are light fixtures in finishes like copper, brass and aged bronze. Earthy color palette – The color palette used in Southwestern bedrooms mimics the surrounding desert and indigenous materials. Incorporate portraits, paintings, art and elaborate tapestries and line them up in the walls. Opt for overstuffed cushions, tufted headboards, button back armchairs and wooden beds that are decoratively carved. Natural light – Another characteristic of tropical style bedrooms is the abundance of natural light. Allowing natural light to flow into the room enhances the beachy vibe of the space. Bright accents – To add a splash of color, bright pops of red, coral, violet and fuchsia are incorporated in tropical style spaces. Combining two popular styles farmhouse and contemporary, the result is the modern farmhouse style.

Bedroom Skylight (Best Types & Designs)

And more important, once you sharpen your knowledge of interior design styles, you can have fun with it. In the words of award-winning interior designer Nate Berkus, “The best design projects were the ones where people broke all the rules.” Because after all, the most impactful design style is your own. Natural elements have a way of bringing the serene feel of the outdoors into interiors. Wooden furniture or stone-carved accessories are also good options for evoking a sense of organic beauty. And if you love plants, opt for types that thrive in low-light conditions, like peace lilies or monsteras.

The mid-century modern style emerged in post-war America during the mid-20th century. It centered on using newly developed (at the time) materials like plywood, plexiglass and plastic, making these pieces available to more people. Natural materials like bamboo, jute, rattan and live plants can create a sense of balance and bring a touch of nature indoors, contributing to a serene atmosphere.

Round off the look with a small side table and a floor lamp – it’ll feel like a serene mini retreat within your bedroom. Let your bedroom design inspiration tell the story of your adventures, real and imaginary. Vintage suitcases and a globe can also give your hidden traveler’s nook an adventurous vibe. Use summer to fuel your bedroom ideas – fill the space with yellow shades, and make it burst with subtle energy. Alternatively, employ bright green, turquoise, or an entire spectrum of a summery flower bouquet in accessories. Eclectic style means, ‘anything goes’ but planned meticulously with proper use of colour, texture, patterns to tie the whole look together.

This piece must be a talking point that is noticed but does not overwhelm the room itself. Beach themed art – Including sea creatures and other things found along the coast can either bring the vacation home or embrace the vacation being had! Starfish designs and images of coral reefs can show what is out in the ocean and even inspire the users to get outside and see them for themselves. Incorporate personal touches –  Add personal touches to your bedroom like sentimental objects, mementos or photographs because they help evoke a feminine vibe into a space.

You can also add rainbow-colored accessories, such as lamps, rugs, and artwork. For the accent color, stick with organic hues like blues and green to create some contrast. Choose furniture pieces with crisp, clean lines to balance out the rougher, textured decor in the space.

Passports for Cruises

do you need your passport to go on a cruise

This could be a cruise departing from or returning to a port outside your home country, or it could refer to a cruise that features international ports of call in its itinerary. Even if you plan to stick to a closed-loop cruise, we still recommend you invest in a passport or passport card before your cruise. Though you can cruise without a passport and still get home if you get stranded in port, the hassle of obtaining a temporary passport on top of making arrangements for last-minute travel is rarely worth it. Even if you're on a closed-loop sailing, certain islands in the Caribbean – Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Barts, Barbados and others -- require a passport for entry. It's your responsibility (not your cruise line's) to learn the requirements of each of the destinations you're visiting before you go.
